Tea is one of the oldest beverages in the world. One legend has its origin in ancient China over 5,000 years ago when Shen Nung, an early emperor whose far-sighted edicts required that all drinking water be boiled as a hygienic precaution. One summer day while visiting a distant region, he and the court stopped to rest in the shade of a wild tea shrub. In accordance with his ruling, the servants began to boil water for the court to drink. Suddenly, a breeze blew a few leaves from the shrub into the pot and the water was infused with a delicious and refreshing flavor. He experimented further and found that it might have medicinal properties as well. He urged the Chinese people to cultivate the plant for the benefit of the entire nation. And so the story of tea began.

In 1908, Tom Sullivan owner of a tea importing business in the United States, sent out samples of his tea in small, silk bags. His confused customers thought that they were supposed to boil the tea in the bags. The idea caught on, and now half of the hot tea drunk in the United States is brewed from tea bags.
